The point of the game of life is to simulate life. Each LED is an "organism" whos fate is decided by the other LED's around it. It is amazing because something so random has created really neat patterns...

The game of life is an example of what is called Cellular Automata which is a discrete modeling tool used in lots of different technical fields from mathematics to biological processes. Conway called it life because it seemed to emulate a living colony, not because it emulates OUR concept of life.
