This is a great way to wrap your cables if you want to ruin them. the constant tight wrap at the end will break down thin cable inside much faster than normal. You want to feel as if you are never bending the cable further than it naturally wants to bend.

Wireless headphones won't be easier if you have to charge both your earbuds, too. And don't forget wireless means a transmitter that drains your battery faster.

You're most certainly right that the lifespan will be reduced by wrapping the cables this way. However--and this may not represent everyone's experience--but I've been wrapping mine like this for years without a problem.
