Why don't you Americans simply count the old fashion way?
In Canada, volunteers count each ballot box. "Scrutineers" from all 5 parties all count them together, all making sure everyone else is held honest. It's fairer, and believe it or not, cheaper, because the parties provide their own scrutineers.

This was from a couple years ago, but the process WAS made public. It was documented in the HBO special "Hacking Democracy" back in 2006. They filmed the entire process from start to finish with complete transparency. Obviously it worked. ;)

The auto-vote-bots in California have already been found to be insecure. It is too risky. Do it via paper like Canada does.
Well, perhaps it is more difficult with a larger population then Canada, but you guys were able to do it 20 years ago with a similar population.
