You're right. In fulfilling the role as a young, innocent girl, Emmy is good, and Sarah Brightman is someone you'd get to fulfill the role as a girl with a truly magnificent, other-worldly voice, like in the book. They're both good, just in COMPLETELY different ways. I think maybe Sarah had more skill, but I'm not sure...

She was sixteen at the time and her voice was very green but "she's been well taught".
There's strain in the middle-high long notes as this is an aria for a fully grown singer but she manages more than just well.
Brightman cannot even try to compare even if her voice is theoretically more mature.
I just hope Ms Rossum has had the sense to leave these heavy roles aside for the moment while her voice gets fuller.

The thing is, Emmy sang this an entire octave lower, and used a STUDIO to help her REACH the high notes.
Ms. Brightman on the other hand, has real talent, with absolutely NO help of a studio at all. That's the difference.

Emmy sings this better than Brightman, in my opinion. Brightman sings it harshly, while I think it should be a more gently sung song.

That's not what I meant.
Emmy sang the song an octave lower than what the song was SUPPOSED to be sung, and the studio helped her raise her pitch.
Ms. Brightman sang it at exactly how high it was supposed to be sung, with no studio help at all.
