Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition Review (Part 1)

Uploaded by: SpoonyOne
Video Description:
While I was in front of the camera, I decided to follow-up on my initial "wait and see" attitude when it came to the new edition of D &D. It's been several game sessions into my new campaign, so here are my initial observations on the topic.
Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who grew up old-school when it comes to role-playing games.

What so great about ... ( 1 month ago by runebeo)
What so great about balanced? too many games from rpgs, trading card games to online games are too balanced. Now Rifts leaves the GM in charge and much like the real world life is not balance by any means and think of comic books. Could a villain like Toad ever stand up to Iron Man? Rifts can be played balanced or wildly unbalanced that's makes it my favorite game and anyone who see it as hard to control is somewhat limited in imagination. Fourth Edition is really overpriced compared to 3.5.

Rifts is the best game that isn't Ironclaw. If you want a game that is balanced but the classes are still unique, play Ironclaw or Jadeclaw by Sanguine LLC.
But come on people...
Fourth edition is a marked improvement. If you find 4th simplified to 3.5 then you need to really consider why you feel that way. The fact that ever character has two progression paths means that there is literally twice as much character variation than in 3.0/3.5 where there was one fighter that worked well, one
cleric, one wizard, ... ( 1 month ago by eternallyfoxwinter)
cleric, one wizard, one sorcerer. The only variations were prestige classes and most of the time you were better off running strait. Fourth is better if for no reason other than EVERY CLASS IS USABLE. The Warlord isn't great in a small party, but he is usable. The bard is gone (thank god) the Gnome is gone (thank god) but for the first time in fifteen years the Ranger is worth a shit. The Barbarian is worth a shit.
All in all, I honestly think I'll stick to Palladium FRPG and Hackmaster.

I have to say that, despite my best intentions, I've enjoyed my experience with 4e. Granted, I spend a lot of that time behind the screen, so it might be different on the other end of the table.
I do agree, though, that I'll miss characters like my halfling rogue with his 5 Wisdom.

It's been so long since I've played D&D. I last played in high school, and that was about 3 years ago (I cut my D&D teeth on v3.5). I do remember my character was an elven wizard who was turned into a vampire, and I was going down the road to becoming a Lich.

how in the hell does a vampire become an entirely different kind of undead? Sounds like more off the wall homebrewed bullshit.

Yo I don't know shit about d&d and I tried to get into it with 2 of my buddies, I made a wizard, and then we didn't have anyone to dm lol

What I don't get is why is that in RPGs there's always emphasis on different elves?? I mean all the other races have just a single sort of race, but for elves, there's all sorts! High Elves, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Sea Elves, Winged Elves, Wild Elves, Drow, Night Elves, Sun Elves, Blood Elves, etc. I mean good grief!!

Yeah elves suck pretty hard, I've always wished that they made more versions of the 'Human' race. Like wood human, dark human, sea human and all that good stuff.
:D

3.5 is better because you can download the core rules for free from the wizards of the coast official site.
I'm cheap.
I personally don't ... ( 1 week ago by Jakegothicsnake)
I personally don't have anything against elves, I actually find them interesting. I just dislike how they always put such emphasis of the different ethnicities of elves while all the ethnicities of races like humans and dwarves are only just in the physical traits.....
Array ( 1 week ago by celestialsalamander)
i stated D&D playing LGH so i'm use to buy abilitys it's fare and you get to disine your chariter rather then the dice.
the problem is racial bonuses are less specific. basicaly it doen't matter what you racisal bonuse are in. the net is all that matters. which makes half orks ridiculusly underpowerd.
i haven't even bought a PH for 4ed. from what i've heard i don't like it.

Hello SpoonyOne,
I have enjoyed listening to your review on 4E, I am still on the fence on buying the books, I started playing D&D with the 1st edition AD&D.
About halfway through your video you mention not being able to roll your stats anymore. I think the PHB mention 4 different method for generating your ability scores... method 4 is still rolling dice to randomly generate your score.
Thanks for your video review.

I have the very first edition of the starter set (OD&D) listed as for $10.00 on the cover. Mint condition. I pulled it out to compare it with 4E. They sure did come a long way! :)
I think that on certain points like rolling for stats and keeping in critical hits that double damage (instead of maxing it) I will keep 3E. This game is all about imagination and as a play group we have taken the best of 3E and 4E (as well as some things from 2E! like weapon, spell and ability ideas). Thank you!
I agree about the ... ( 3 days ago by darthspeaks)
I agree about the interdependency between the characters. Team play is the key to really enjoying the flavor. Warlords and minion leaders are good ideas but after the combat is over I found the Warlord's abilities hardly used to make an effect. There more were more unfavorable changes than favorable changed, IMO. I think they should have had a booklet for conversions between 3E and 4E to have access to 3E adventures with 4E rules. Thoughts?
